Friday Night (October 20th to 21st) was one of the busiest nights anyone can remember for Shelburne Police. Although the night didn’t include the most serious calls for service Shelburne Police has ever had to deal with, it nevertheless had many serious incidents reported in a short period of time.
As a result of these incidents, Shelburne Police has laid 12 criminal charges in relation to the various incidents from the one night, with several more charges pending. Investigations into the matters are continuing and more charges may result.
Due to on-going investigations, and youth being involved in several of the matters, Shelburne Police is limiting the details being released about some of the incidents.
The night started with an allegation of a sexual assault which resulted in a single charge of sexual assault being laid the following day.
The evening included two impaired driving investigations. Both were called in by concerned citizens. The first incident resulted in a 54 year old woman charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Fail to Provide a Breath Sample. In the second impaired incident, a pick-up truck struck a tree on Owen Sound Street and then fled the scene. Police located the vehicle and the driver was transported to hospital for unspecified reasons. The driver provided breath samples almost triple the legal limit. The 37 year man was charged with Impaired Operation, Over 80 Operation, Dangerous Operation, and Fail to Remain.
The evening further consisted of two minor Trouble with Youth calls, and a call for a suicidal person. These calls resolved without incident and all was found to be well.
In another incident, drugs and a prohibited weapon were seized from a car. This investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
Shortly after midnight, Shelburne Police received 9-1-1 calls that a group of people were fighting. A few moments later the calls indicated that several people were injured and possibly stabbed. Police arrived on scene finding a large group of people fleeing the area, and establishing that two people were stabbed. In total three people were transported to hospital. The third person had injuries but was not stabbed in the incident. Two of the injured were released from the hospital within a few hoursl, but one of the stabbing victims was transferred to a Toronto Hospital where they remain on Saturday night. This investigation is ongoing, however a youth has been charged with 2 counts of Assault with a Weapon, 2 counts of Assault Causing Bodily Harm, 1 count of Assault, and 1 count of Weapons Dangerous.
